Grand Prior Emeritus and Lieutenant Grand Master of the Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem – Knights of Malta (SHOSJ)

On Friday, 16 May 2025, within the dignified surroundings of the Fiumei Road Cemetery, we bid a solemn and heartfelt farewell to our beloved Brother, Chevalier Árpád Bartha de Bonta GBGCSJ – Grand Prior Emeritus and former Deputy Grand Master of the Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem – Knights of Malta (SHOSJ).

The funeral was marked by the presence of over thirty knights and dames, whose attendance ensured a ceremony of both noble dignity and knightly reverence. The coffin, borne under honour guard, was flanked by wreaths bearing the Maltese cross, as well as the sword, decorations, and photographs that spoke to the life and legacy of this great man. Each symbol bore silent testimony to a life lived in service, honour, and faith.

Joining the family, friends, and members of our Order were representatives from kindred and chivalric fraternities who came to pay their final respects. These included the Order of Vitéz, led by Vitéz Count János Molnár-Gazsó; the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, represented by Grand Prior Tamás Czinkóczi, Knight Grand Cross; and the Order of Saint Gerard, represented by Chev. Gyula Rajkó.

The mourning service was led with solemn grace by Pastor Sándor Balogh of the Reformed Church of Pilisvörösvár. In addition to the pastor’s eulogy, touching tributes were delivered by His Imperial and Royal Highness Sandor von Habsburg-Lothringen, Prince Grand Master of the SHOSJ, and by Dr. Chev. Gábor Nagy, Grand Prior of the Hungarian Grand Priory. Both spoke movingly of Árpád’s life, character, and enduring contribution to the Order.

Following the ceremony, the mourners processed in solemn unity to accompany Chev. Árpád on his final earthly journey.

Afterwards, a gathering was held at the residence of Dr. Chev. Ferenc Papp de Kökényesd GCOSJ. In the warm embrace of knightly fellowship, members of the Order and honoured guests shared stories, memories, and moments of reflection. It was as though Árpád himself was present, offering his familiar comfort through his gentle wit and keen intellect – qualities that so defined his character.

Chev. Árpád Bartha de Bonta was more than a leader. He was a source of inspiration, the driving force behind our Grand Priory’s initiatives both within Hungary and abroad. Tireless in his dedication, he encouraged those around him, championed action, and always recognised the efforts of his fellow knights and dames. His legacy is one of wisdom, courage, and boundless service.

We shall not forget him. His spirit lives on in the heart of our Order – a guiding light for all who follow in his path.
