Understanding our heritage gives greater meaning to the work we undertake today. For members, friends and supporters wishing to explore that heritage, we are pleased to draw renewed attention to Antoine Bonello’s The Origins and Histories of the Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights of Malta.
Drawing on many years of research, Bonello traces more than nine centuries of Hospitaller history. His account begins with the care of sick and vulnerable pilgrims in Jerusalem and follows the development of a religious and military order through centuries of conflict and change.
Sieges, battles, victories and losses form part of this story. Alongside them runs the Hospitaller commitment to caring for others, a theme that gives the book particular relevance to those involved in the Order’s work today.
The book offers a chronological account of this history, examining the myths and legends surrounding the Order and exploring its evolution towards charitable service and voluntary work in medical and social welfare.
For newer members, it offers an opportunity to explore the traditions behind the responsibilities they have embraced. For longstanding members, it provides a reason to return to that history and reflect on what service means in their own lives.
We warmly encourage members to read the book and share it with others interested in Hospitaller history.
Reading also supports our charitable mission: 100% of proceeds from sales go towards the Order’s charitable activities.
