After being expelled from Rhodes in 1522, the Knights of St. John were granted the islands of Malta and Gozo in 1530 by Emperor Charles V. They transformed Malta into a formidable stronghold, significantly influencing its culture and architecture.
The Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem is registered as a charity in the appropriate nation of each Grand Priory, and carries out humanitarian and hospitaller activities worldwide, tending to the sick, the poor and the homeless, as well as those affected by war and famine.
