On 29 November 2024, the Grand Priory of Hungary of the Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem hosted its annual charity dinner at the beautifully situated BOATanic Restaurant, offering guests a unique panoramic setting for a truly special evening. This year’s event marked a significant milestone—it was the most well-attended gathering since the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 50 Knights, Dames, and guests in attendance, second only to the 2022 International Equestrian Inauguration in Pannonhalma.

The evening began with spiritual reflections and prayers led by Rev. Dávid Kovács, the Grand Priory’s spiritual leader, setting a reverent and meaningful tone. Guests were warmly welcomed by Chev. Dr. Gábor Nagy BGCSJ, Grand Prior of Hungary. A particularly touching moment followed as Knight Bartha Árpád de Bonta GB.GCSJ(H), Grand Prior Emeritus, made his first public appearance after a lengthy hospital stay and addressed the gathering with heartfelt words.

The primary purpose of the evening was to raise funds for the “Esőemberke” Foundation, a Vas County-based organisation supporting individuals with autism. István Nádor, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, gave a moving presentation about their work, and gifted guests with lavender products handmade by the foundation’s members. Thanks to the generosity of those present, the dinner raised €1,250 in donations to support the foundation’s ongoing efforts.

Throughout the evening, the Hungarian Grand Priory recognised several of its members and supporters for their outstanding contributions to the Order’s mission. Certificates of gratitude were awarded to:

  • Chev. Tamás Párkányi OSJ
  • Brother György Sipos SB
  • Chev. Csaba Fórizs GCSJ
  • Chev. Dr. Ferenc Papp GCOSJ(J) de Kökényesd
  • Chev. Ákos Ütő de Árkos GCSJ(J)
  • Chev. Dr. Gyula Béla Szentes de Szentkirályszabadja GCOSJ(J)
  • Chev. János Lászay GCOSJ
  • Chev. Ottó Kürtössy de Kürtös GCSJ(J)

In addition, certificates of appreciation were presented to Brother László Pardavi and Brother Árpád Rátonyi for their selfless service to the Order.

As part of tradition, Chev. Imre Lakos OSJ was honoured with a jubilee decoration sword in celebration of his 70th birthday.

A highlight of the evening was the art auction featuring unique works by artist Márta Sipos, created using a distinctive technique. The auction raised a significant amount in support of the charity cause. The event’s atmosphere was further enriched by the heartfelt musical performance of Eszter Sára Kővári, who performed the Blessing of Aaron and traditional Christmas carols.

The evening concluded with a three-course dinner and vibrant fellowship, reaffirming the Order’s commitment to service, unity, and compassion. This successful event not only strengthened the bonds within the community but also demonstrated the unwavering dedication of the Knights and Dames of Malta to support those in need.
