St. Lawrence Church in Birgu (Vittoriosa) stands as a testament to Malta’s rich history and architectural heritage. Designed by Lorenzo Gafà and constructed between 1681 and 1697, this magnificent church is an exemplary piece of Roman Baroque architecture, featuring an opulent interior adorned with statues, paintings, and an impressive marble Latin cross.
As one of the oldest parishes in Malta, Vittoriosa holds a special place in the island’s history. Before the completion of St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, St. Lawrence Church served as the conventual church of the Order of St. John. The church played a pivotal role during the Great Siege of 1565, with its front area used as a cemetery for the fallen. Later, the St. Joseph’s Chapel and the Crucifix Chapel were built on this site, adding layers of history and devotion to the church complex.
Adjacent to the church is a small yet fascinating museum, which houses two extraordinary artefacts: the hat and sword of Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette. According to tradition, these items were placed in the church by the Grand Master himself, as an act of gratitude for the Order’s victory during the Great Siege.
St. Lawrence Church remains a beacon of Malta’s baroque artistry and its enduring historical significance, inviting visitors to explore its sacred spaces and the stories they preserve.
